University of Michigan Office of Financial Aid (OFA)
Spring/Summer 2009 Financial Aid Request for Funds (RFF) and Application Instructions for Continuing UM Students
Note: This form is only for continuing UM students. Entering students should not complete this form. To apply for Spring/Summer aid, entering students must complete a 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) .
Continuing UM students must complete the Office of Financial Aid (OFA) Spring/Summer 2009 Request for Funds (RFF) form and additional documents, as requested, to apply for the following financial aid:
- Federal and University grants
- Federal Work-Study
- Federal Direct Loan (note: Perkins Loan is not available for Spring/Summer)
These funds, especially grant funds, are very limited for Spring/Summer. The types of aid for which you will be considered will be based on your intended enrollment, the date you meet all of the aid application requirements, and your demonstrated financial need. Because funding for Spring/Summer is more limited, your aid for Spring/Summer might be less than the aid you received for Fall/Winter.
The RFF and instructions are available here so you may apply for aid online (on a secure server) or download paper copies of the form and instructions. Be sure to click on the Continue button at or near the bottom of each page to proceed through the site (there are two pages of important information about your financial aid after you complete the Spring/Summer RFF, so be sure to continue all the way to the end of the site). See our website for information on who is eligible to receive financial aid.
How to Apply:
1. Complete the FAFSA: If you haven't already submitted a 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor at www.fafsa.ed.gov, do so immediately. The Office of Financial Aid must receive your FAFSA by March 6, 2009, to consider you for all aid programs (allow 2-3 weeks for the FAFSA to be sent to UM from the federal processor). If you already submitted the FAFSA to apply for Fall/Winter 2008-2009 aid, proceed to step 2.
2. Submit the Spring/Summer Request for Funds (RFF) to OFA by March 6, 2009 (click on the link below to apply online).
Note: If you will be enrolled in a Social Work Practicum Placement program during Spring/Summer, you must also complete a Social Work Addendum (PDF) by March 6 .3. Register for Spring/Summer classes during your appointed enrollment time: Your financial aid will not be awarded unless you are registered at least half-time. If you will enroll in both Spring term and Summer term classes, you must enroll for both terms during your appointed enrollment time to be considered for aid for both terms.
4. If you add or switch terms: If you decide to add a term or switch terms (e.g., from Spring to Summer or Summer to Spring), you must submit a new RFF indicating your correct enrollment. We will award your aid based on the terms indicated on your most recent RFF and discard any previous RFFs.
Please note the following deadline dates:
Friday, March 6, 2009: PRIORITY FILING DATE - In order to consider you for all aid programs, OFA must receive all your application materials by this date and you must register for Spring/Summer classes during your appointed enrollment time. If we receive your application materials after the March 6 priority filing date, we will consider you for aid, but note that only limited funding will be available.
Friday, May 15, 2009: Final date to apply for Spring term financial aid funds. OFA will NOT be able to process Spring term application materials submitted after this date.Friday, July 17, 2009: Final date to apply for Summer term and the combined Spring/Summer term financial aid funds. OFA will NOT be able to process Summer and combined Spring/Summer term application materials submitted after this date.
Keep in mind:
- Grant aid for eligible students is limited; be sure to apply by March 6 to be considered.
- If you enroll in both Spring term and Summer term classes, you must enroll for both terms during your appointed enrollment period in order to be considered for aid for both terms.
- Financial aid for Spring/Summer is initially awarded to applicants based on the assumption that they will be enrolled full-time. If you enroll less than full-time, your aid will be reduced after the drop/add period, so you should plan accordingly.
- You must be registered for classes at least half-time in order to receive any financial aid.
- If you anticipate having child care expenses, you might wish to review the eligibility criteria for the Child Care Subsidy Program. See www.finaid.umich.edu/Types_of_Financial_Aid/child.asp.
