Grant Programs

 Federal School Code
  002325

Grants are gift aid from federal, state, or university sources. They are awarded to students on the basis of need, and they do not need to be repaid.

The University of Michigan attaches a high priority to need-based financial aid to fulfill its commitment to meeting the demonstrated financial need of Michigan resident undergraduates. Need-based grants are the cornerstone of our aid programs to ensure that an economically diverse student population from the State of Michigan can enroll at the University. More than $55 million in the form of need-based grants were awarded during the 2006-2007 academic year.

Note:  Students are encouraged to investigate the availability of grants or scholarships through their home states.  Michigan residents, see the Michigan Competitive ScholarshipNon-Michigan residents can find the addresses of their state's higher education agencies on the web through the Department of Education.

For information on how the grant aid portion of your financial aid package is affected by scholarships and other outside aid, see A Note about Scholarships and Other Resources under How Need Is Determined
