Scholarships for U-M Students

TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are gift funds that are often awarded to students with high academic achievement or special talents; they do not have to be repaid. University of Michigan students may be eligible for several types and sources of scholarships, including the following:

  • U-M Office of Financial Aid Scholarships
  • U-M School, College, and Departmental Scholarships
  • U-M Alumni Club Scholarships
  • State Scholarships
  • Private Scholarships
  • Study Abroad Scholarships
  • Distinguished Scholarships

U-M OFFICE OF FINANCIAL AID SCHOLARSHIPS

The University of Michigan Office of Financial Aid administers a variety of scholarship programs that recognize superior academic achievement, leadership qualities, and potential contribution to the scholarly community of the University. Some scholarships are based partly on financial need and others reflect the University's commitment to achieving a diverse student body.

ENTERING FRESHMEN AND TRANSFER STUDENTS:

Entering freshmen and transfer students are automatically considered for most University-administered scholarships when they apply for admission to the University. Only a few scholarships require a separate application. However, to be considered for scholarships that are awarded to students with financial need, you must also apply for financial aid. See the U-M Office of Financial Aid Scholarship Listing for more information.

Be sure to apply to U-M early. And, if you feel you may need financial assistance, apply for financial aid early too. In general, equal consideration for scholarships is given to students who:

The University notifies entering freshmen by mail during their senior year in high school if they have been selected for one or more University scholarships.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRANSFER STUDENTS:

A limited number of University scholarships are offered specifically to students transferring to the University of Michigan from community colleges in Michigan. See the U-M Office of Financial Aid Scholarship Listing for more information.

CONTINUING U-M STUDENTS:

Some University scholarships are available to currently enrolled students. See the U-M Office of Financial Aid Scholarship Listing for more information.

GRADUATE STUDENTS:

The Office of Financial Aid administers only a few scholarships for graduate students (see the U-M Office of Financial Aid Scholarship Listing). The main sources of U-M graduate student scholarship/fellowship opportunities are your U-M School, College, or Department and Rackham School of Graduate Studies

You may also find non-University (private) scholarship opportunities on our Private Scholarships page. If you plan to study abroad, the U-M International Institute lists a number of funding opportunities for graduate and professional school students.

Note: U-M School, College, and Departmental deadlines and notification dates vary. The schools, colleges, and departments notify students directly if they are awarded one of these scholarships.

U-M ALUMNI CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS

University of Michigan Alumni Clubs throughout the country provide scholarships and awards for University of Michigan students from their communities. Scholarships are awarded to undergraduates on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, and community service, and their amounts vary.

For more information about these scholarships, contact the U-M alumni clubs directly. For a list of local U-M clubs, see the U-M Alumni Association's website.

STATE SCHOLARSHIPS

The State of Michigan administers a number of scholarships for Michigan resident undergraduates. See the following websites for more information:

Non-Michigan residents should investigate scholarships offered by their home states.

PRIVATE (NON-UNIVERSITY) SCHOLARSHIPS

Many private scholarships are offered each year by a variety of corporate, professional, trade, governmental, civic, religious, social, and fraternal organizations. The amounts of the scholarships range from small honorariums to thousands of dollars.

See our Private Scholarships page for a listing of some of these scholarships and how to apply for them. The page also includes information and links to free private scholarship search services. Applying for private scholarships is time-consuming, so start as early as your junior year of high school. Breaks from school are good times to spend on your search.

How Scholarships Affect Your Financial Aid Package

The Office of Financial Aid makes every effort to meet your demonstrated financial need. While any scholarship you receive will improve your overall aid package, according to federal regulations and University policy it must be counted as one of your financial resources when your eligibility for need-based aid is determined.
Most scholarships will reduce any loan or Work-Study awards you receive before they reduce any grant aid. However, receiving any one of the following scholarships will reduce your eligibility for need-based grants before reducing your eligibility for need-based loan or Work-Study awards:
-Michigan Competitive Scholarship (MCS)
-Michigan Promise Scholarship

-Detroit Compact Scholarship
-Wade McCree Scholarship

In addition, receiving either a Wade McCree or a Detroit Compact Scholarship may reduce your eligibility for an MCS.
