How and When to Apply for Aid (Transfer Students)

Transfer students entering in the Fall term 2008 must complete two applications to apply for aid:

1. The CSS/PROFILE Application, and
2. T
he Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Information on these forms determines your expected family contribution and your eligibility for aid programs.  Be sure to submit these forms by the deadline dates listed below to be considered for all aid programs (use estimated tax information if necessary).  Although you may apply later, you might not be considered for all aid programs.  Do not wait to be admitted before applying for aid!

Fall/Winter 2008-2009:

APPLY FOR AID:

October 1:  As soon as possible after October 1, 2007, submit the 2008-2009 CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE application online at https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/index.jsp to be considered for all need-based University grants and scholarships, including the M-PACT Scholarship, Michigan Grant, Michigan Achievement Award, and any other need-based U-M scholarships.  Note: Some students may be required to submit additional PROFILE documents (such as the Noncustodial Parent PROFILE) to be considered for need-based U-M grants and scholarships.  The U-M Office of Financial Aid will contact students by email, if they must submit additional documents.

Be sure to list U-M's CSS Code 1839.  The PROFILE costs $25 for the initial application and one school report. Each additional school report costs $16.

January 1:  As soon as possible after January 1, 2008, submit the 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor at www.fafsa.ed.gov to be considered for all need-based and non-need-based federal and state aid programs, including the Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Michigan Competitive scholarship, Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver, Perkins Loan, Health Professions Loan, Nursing Student Loan, Direct Loan, and Work-Study.

Be sure to use U-M's Federal School Code 002325.  There is no cost to complete the FAFSA.  If you apply online, you will need a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to "sign" your FAFSA.  One parent should also have his/her own PIN to "sign" your online FAFSA if you are a dependent student or an independent student applying for a Pharmacy or Dental Health Professions Loan.  Go to
www.pin.ed.gov to acquire your free PIN.  Call 1-800-4-FEDAID to request a paper copy of the FAFSA.

Notice! Rejected FAFSA:  If your FAFSA is rejected by the federal processor, it is not considered "processed" and you may miss the April 30 priority filing date. The most common reason why a FAFSA is rejected is when it is missing the required signatures.  Be sure to sign the FAFSA and if you are a dependent student or an independent student applying for the Health Professions Loan, be sure to also have one parent sign.

March 1:  Suggested date by which you should submit your FAFSA and PROFILE applications to be considered for need-based scholarships and to receive an aid offer by the May 1 enrollment deposit deadline.  For Michigan Competitive Scholarship (MCS) consideration, the federal processor must receive your FAFSA application by this date.

April 30:   Priority Filing Date. The University's Office of Financial Aid must receive your FAFSA and PROFILE records by this date to consider you for all aid programs.

May 1:  Pay enrollment deposit to the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

May 30:  If we requested that you submit additional documents for verification purposes, our office must receive them by this date to consider you for all aid programs.  For more information, click here.

APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS (SEPTEMBER - JUNE):

Conduct your search for private scholarships from September to June of your senior year in high school.

From October to January, students are considered for most University scholarship programs upon admission to the University.  You are encouraged to submit your admissions application early to receive equal consideration with other applicants.  For more information on scholarships, click here.

Aid for Winter Term 2008

  • To apply for financial aid for Winter term 2008, you must submit a 2007-2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  Be sure to list U-M's Federal School Code 002325 on the FAFSA. You must have a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to complete the FAFSA online (see www.pin.ed.gov to apply for a PIN).  To avoid delays, your parents should also apply for a PIN to act as their signature for the online FAFSA.  See the note about Rejected FAFSAs (above).
  • To be considered for all aid programs, our office must receive your FAFSA record from the federal processor by January 11, 2008 (allow three to four weeks for the processor to send us your record once you submit it).  We will notify you by email if we need additional documents or information; these materials must be submitted within 30 days of notification for you to be considered for all aid programs.
  • If you already filed a FAFSA, but you did not request that the results be sent to the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (School Code 002325), go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov and select "Make Corrections to a Processed FAFSA" or call 1-800-4-FEDAID.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Support

In early March 2006 the University of Michigan, along with seven other institutions (see U-M's press release), received a grant from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. The purpose of the grant is to support the creation of programs that increase opportunities for high-achieving, low-income community college students to earn bachelor's degrees from selective four-year institutions.  This grant, along with a significant financial commitment by U-M, will be used for outreach and support programs to recruit and retain community college transfer students to add to the diversity of the University community.

Financial aid is available from existing University, federal, and state programs. Scholarships specifically for community college transfer students are available. Transfer students will also be considered for all other University scholarships.

The University does not have sufficient funds to meet the full demonstrated financial need of nonresident students directly; however, students who are eligible for scholarships from U-M or other private sources may be eligible to cover their costs through these combined resources.  Another option for nonresident students is the Federal Direct PLUS Loan and private loansAll community college students considering transferring to U-M should apply for financial aid (see above).
